Guillermo Willie Romo
Guillermo “Willie” Romo was always Blessed to share a life journey in sports. His Parents Ana and Jose Antonio Romo and Siblings Sisters Christy Rice and Denise Sanchez and Brother Jose Antonio Romo Jr. were prominent supporters of his endeavors. His wife Cynthia and children Son Willie Austin and Daughter Celeste Sierra were mainstays on the playing field. Their son Willie Austin helped lead Montwood High School, to a District Championship and Bi-District Championship and received All District and All City recognition. Their daughter Celeste Sierra helped capture a District Championship, and Bi-District Championship for the Montwood softball team. Cynthia and Coach Romo joke about how their kids were raised on a baseball field. From 1990-1994, Romo excelled in 3 major sports at Del Valle High School (Baseball, Football, & Basketball) including named All District, and All Academic in Football, Basketball, & Baseball. In football he played Quarterback for El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame Honoree Eloy Alvarado. He played 3 years of Varsity Baseball for El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame Honoree Mike Beltran Sr. helping capture Bi-District Championships, and was named All District Outfielder in 1994. During his tenure as the Head Coach at Montwood High School, his teams have amassed 254 wins and four District Championships, five Bi District Championships, and two Area Championships. These accomplishments reflect not only competitive success but also commitment to consistency, preparation, and a culture of accountability. Romo received District Coach of the Year honors in 2017, as well as the El Paso Times All City Coach of the Year and the El Paso Baseball Hall of Fame Coach of the Year in 2017. Romo’s career has been dedicated to building strong, disciplined teams and helping young athletes grow both on and off the field. He draws pride in promoting the development of student athletes. Over the past 13 years, 62 Montwood players have gone on to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level. This success stems from a holistic approach to coaching—emphasizing fundamentals, character, academic responsibility, and long term growth. He believes that a great baseball program is built not only on wins, but on the opportunities, it creates for young people.
